Accessible Price Comparison Sites – Hats off to the BBC

The BBC have done some further investigation in to the accessibility of price comparison sites. A few weeks ago, they exposed a few nefarious companies for aggressive outbounding. Now they’re looking at accessibility on the web. (The BBC reported on this a few years ago – Most websites failing disabled)

97% of sites are still inaccessible but why should we cater for this minority? Well, there are other benefits apart from being altruistic. One of those is effective search engine optimisation.

We get quite a few developers reading this site, so perhaps now is the time to brush off your accessibility notes, look at graceful degradation and implement a site for everyone, not just your core audience.

Or, perhaps you’re one of those developers with JAWS installed and you just need to make a few improvements to go from WCAG1 to WCAG2.

Well Done the BBC

Looks like the BBC’s investigations might not be that good afterall – according to BlogStorm they were testing the wrong websites:

@George – if you’re going to use posh words like “nefarious”, make sure you can spell the simple ones like “agggggggggggressive” ;)

Seriously though, the BBC have come across a market which millions of people use (which should have come up on their radar much earlier). Now they’re trying to knock the comparison websites and I can’t work out if it is a force for good or just to grab some headlines.

Either way, spot on with the topic. Accessibility is often forgotten about and very important for millions of people – I guess on that note, I can’t complain.

It’s just a shame that the BBC included the wrong websites in their research – I’d have been interested in hearing what they thought of the “real” Confused and GoCompare.

To develop a price comparison site is not very easy. I have changed side from not liking them to actually developing one :D I have to say though that BBC is right to an extend, but accessibility is not an issue only of price comparison sites.
