Can new insurance companies rely on SEO?

The barriers to entry for insurance comparisons sites are getting bigger. As previously seen, the cost of eyeballs that insurers/aggregators are willing to pay has been coming down.

Is it now too much to ask if we’re relying on SEO as an initial startup marketing strategy? The latest ‘panda’ google update killed off many of the smaller, newer sites. What are we to do now?

Chris Dixon (serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist) believes that SEO is no longer an option:

Many of the today’s most successful informational sites such as Yelp, Wikipedia and TripAdvisor relied heavily on SEO for their initial growth…startups – who generally have small teams, small budgets, and the scruples to avoid black-hat tactics – should no longer consider SEO a viable marketing strategy.
