Google launched their credit card comparison service in February 2010. They’re now improving it and promoting it via their Google Comparison Ads.This new placement, below the standard three sponsored links will likely get significant clicks. (You may have also noticed that the background colour has changed to pink (but that’s another story!)).
Moneysupermarket, Moneyexpert and CapitalOne are going to be the ones most likely to suffer from this as they’ve just moved down a position. Once you incorporate the universal search features for these SERPS, you need to be really aggressive to get the clicks.
So, to compete with these guys at the top (Google), you need to
- Spend lots on Adwords
- Be an authority site so that you CTR is high enough (cf. above and below)
- Have excellent SEO
- Linkbuild without getting penalised
- Dominate the SERPS by featuring in Google News
- Be part of the Google Comparison Program
- Make sure you’re top of the SERPS for some of the autosuggest terms

Saving a few dollars on your car insurance isn’t all that easy if you assumed that browsing around shopping for cheap auto insurance quote is the way. Sure it pays to compare quotes from different sources but the question is how sure are you that none of them have jacked up the rates or haven’t included what is not needed by you.
It seems like we’re only going to see more and more of this stuff. Google is going to be the long term competitor for a lot of websites so I guess we’re all going to have to be better at the items on your list.
I think Google are overstepping the mark and really are just greedy control freaks.
