thecomparisons.com – A new aggregator set for launch

by George on September 10, 2007

The Comparisons Official Logo

A new comparison site, thecomparisons.com aims to “compare prices for the whole family”. Is this the beginning of an aggreggator of aggregators, the price comparison site that will compare all other price comparisons sites…? We’ve been keeping an eye on this site for a while - the domain has only just
gone live and appears to be ownedby The Comparisons Limited in Sheffield.

Does anyone have the inside scoop on who they are? Come On Readers!

UPDATE: Thanks to our readers, it looks like QuoteExchange are powering the backend. Also, it could be unrelated but  The AA have snapped up the domain www.thecomparisons.net.

Quote Exchange looks to be behind the quote engine (they do Quote Detective etc…). I doubt that means it’s an aggregator of aggregators. Sorry to hijack slightly, but does anyone know what is going on with Compare The Market in Google?

Rich September 11, 2007 at 11:40 am

Creased – spotted that, looks like a rogue robots.txt file blocking googlebot! – they’ve fixed now, should come back with a description etc.

Thought you guys had disappeared, this blog has been very quiet over the summer.

Why don’t we kick things back off, how about Uswitch’s 2 million backlinks to their car insurance page (as per yahoo) or tesco & more than buying run of site links on timesonline.co.uk or all those still ranking nicely with their Text-link-ads inventories.

Google sure did send out a strong message back in May – NOT!

@Creased Good spot, it could mean that they use Quote Exchange for some of the aggregator tie ups and another service provider (CDL, SSP etc) for other porducts or to get the full market.

One assumes they’ll be doing a multi-product search (based on the strap line and the logo with the cat!).

@Rich Sadly both Ernest and I have day jobs! We’ve got some good stuff planned though…

I was waiting for everyone else! I’ve been here the whole time. Hitting page refresh every two minutes. Just longing for a comment from someone. Anyone. ;)

All sheffield addresses – has this got anything to do with The AA I wonder?

Creased September 11, 2007 at 4:09 pm

@George …talking about the logo, isn’t it a bit un-pc to have a typical white family? Maybe i’m just being over-the-top. Thoughts?

Ernest September 11, 2007 at 5:55 pm

@Creased

You’ve got a grey cat! What more do you want?! ;)

Hmmm – I am getting nothing on either http://www.thecomparisons.com or http://www.thecomparisons.net – have tried firefox, opera and explorer but no joy. Anyone know what is going on?

The Comparisons September 18, 2007 at 12:02 pm

thecomparisons.com will be along shortly – watch this space…

Ernest September 18, 2007 at 3:20 pm

@thecomparisons.com

How about an exclusive for Insiders View? What’s going to be so different about your service, brand and website?

George September 18, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Will comparing the comparisons engines work? Some don’t think so:

I wonder what kind of music thecomparisons.com play? Here is their band page on myspace:

Well the sheffield address for The comparisons ltd is probably bogus if its at omnia one…

‘Increase the potential of your business with a virtual office at Omnia One.’

Ernesto September 30, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Ernest,

What about a piece on ConfidentCover.com, the new aggregator for the Over 50s?

Motorway Direct (in Sheffield) provide the AA with the warranty service, as per the FSA details on the aa warranty website:

AA Warranty is a trademark of The Automobile Association Limited and is used with their permission under licence to Motorway Direct Plc. AA Mechanical Insurance Services Limited is part of the Motorway Direct Plc group of companies.

For the purposes of the Data Protection Act 1998, the data controller in relation to the information You supply is Motorway Direct plc trading as AA Warranty, (Company No: 3222540), Warranty House, Savile Street East, Don Valley, Sheffield, S4 7UQ

I’ve got a feeling this is going to be a largely predictable let down when it launches :( Probably a re-skin of a collection of established aggregation products across a few products. I wouldn’t expect anything particular new in the technology/provision. Let’s see what they produce as part of their core website offering – plenty of space for innovation in this sector.

thecomparisons page has been updated (as of about 20:30 last night). It now includes some groovy animations!
Take a look:

Date of incorporation was back in May 2007. I’d be expecting something pretty special for 5 months work – it’s not like they’ve spent all their time on the branding!!

George October 5, 2007 at 10:19 am

The new animation reminds me of the Bupa adverts.

OK, so no big revelation but despite all their best efforts not to be found out, we have it on good authority that thecomparisons.net is coming from a player in the data service side of things. Obviously someone with a grounding in the static side of data, they’re looking to get into the provision of live data.

Any ideas anyone?

The comparisons site has gone live, approx. 3pm today. Very cute, interesting ‘South Park’ viral movie trailer. Can see where all the development time went, clearly did not go on the technical quote engine side…

Ernest November 9, 2007 at 11:09 pm

What a pile of complete turd! And to think we were all waiting, eagerly anticipating a wonderful new insurance comparison website!!

The javascript look ups are pants, the form layout and field selection is awful and the overall design could have been done better by a 10 year old using FrontPage!

I know we give most companies a hard time (due to our own high standards!) but this is truly awful. Maybe we should be thankful for the services which companies such as gocompare and moneysupermarket provide?

Ernest November 9, 2007 at 11:13 pm

Haha… I’ve thought of a great new poll. Which site looks worse – thecomparisons.com or insurancewide.com?

Tough choice but I’ve got to give the award to thecomparisons …simply because it looks like they’ve actually tried ;) LMAO
